I've started changing over to LED bulbs on my 1996 Defender. This page will be updated as I go.
All of my LED's were bought online from Ultraleds.co.uk
Instrument Illumination
Standard bulb: 12V 1.2W capless
Replacement : (501) Green 6 Leds Super Bright (Pair)

Tip: The bulbs are removed from the bulb holder by using a pin and pushing
them out from rear.

In use the bulbs are much brighter than the originals and produce a beautiful
emerald green light.
Unfortunately not a great picture, but with only the bulbs in the speedo changed,
the difference in the light levels between the LEDs and the original filament
bulbs in the other instruments is plain to see.
Tail Lamps
Standard bulb: 12V 5/21W bayonet
Replacement : (380) 15mm Baynet 24 Red Led Stop & Tail Ultra Custom Ver (Pair)

The width of the bulb head is slightly larger than the original at 26mm.
They fitted fine in the rear light units on my 1996 Defender (XFD100100
Rear light unit - red - 12v from 95MY - MA).
