Roof Console

The DIY Option

Bernie and Karen have designed and built their own console. Further details can be found here.

Their website contains some other great ideas and is well worth a look around.

"Off The Shelf" Console

The following pictures and comments were posted on the Difflock forum by Gary, and show the overhead console fitted to his friend Mark's Defender.

It console was sourced from an Australian company called Consoles.com. The units are custom built to suit with exact apertures for your proposed equipment and came with two pairs of directional map reading lights.

The CB and additional switches for his auxillary equipment were purchased from the UK. The switches are from Vehicle Wiring Products.

The console build was quoted at £280 with delivery from Australia but then Mark was stung for import tax on top (sorry can't remember exactly how much for, but I have in mind, somewhere between £40 - £65).

I remember being impressed with the packaging of the unit - the apertures had temporary precision cut balsa wood panels in place to protect during transit. The main construction is out of marine ply with a padded grey vinyl material. They have a choice of colours as well.

All fixings are hidden inside the console. I didn't see the install so I'm not sure what Mark used exactly. The fixings are into the metal, internal ceiling ribbs of a Td5 Defender.

By all accounts fitting wasn't too bad but is definately a two man job.
