Vegoil:
Filtering Used Oil
by Michael Graye
I started by buying a Mitivac filter from Difflock
It has 6mm tube supplied which fits onto 6mm pneumatic push fit fittings available at all good stockists (and most crap ones).
My kit is bored out to 10mm to speed things up but beware that you don't void you warranty with difflock by doing this.
I also bought some pneumatic silencers from RS Components cat. number 454-7395
These are fairly cheap and filter to a high degree.
I don't know the microns but they get rid of all gunk.
I fitted them to some 4 way 1/4" BSP adaptors to form a manifold, again to aid speed...
I drain the oil out of the can of waste by puncturing the can...
...and then keep slitting the can down with a Stanley knife to tap off more oil.
Soon you will come to darker oil and/or sludge so whip a new bottle underneath to catch this '2nd grade stuff'.
Leave this sludge to settle for a week or so then suck out the good stuff then pour the sludge into a 25ltr. container with part of the top cut off and a drain tap 1/2 way down it...then leave for a while and it will seperate again into usable oil/fuel...
All the good, light looking oil that you get should be put into a washing up bowl, etc. and use the vac. pump/manifold to drain it.
This is the 'good stuff' and I add it straight to my tank.
I have a drum with a tap which I draw from as and when...
I decant it into 5 litre bottles ready to pour into Joeys fuel tank, these are old water and "Comfort" bottles.
They are Ideal because they have really wide necks...
Jerry cans are really heavy and take 30 years to decant...honest!
You will need to clean the filter manifold because it will get full of goo.
I use (pump) diesel...
I also "backflush the blue filter thingies to "pull out the goo from the opposite direction of flow...
You can see a 2"BSP coupling with a 2"-1/4"BSP adaptor either end and the filter is screwed inside and the diesel is pulled through it (backwards to its normal operation) to thin out and remove the goo/tallow.
Start your whole project by going to the supermarket and buying their 3 ltr. bottles of veg. oil.
These will be needed for catching the dregs of your can of waste oil... they are clear and hold a fair bit...perfect.
You can see if there is any water in the bottom very easily.
Difflocks funnel with removable brass gauze is ideal for the job of filtering bits of chips and the mk1 peppercorn seed!
I can flatten the waste oil cans ready for recycle...
I hope you guys get something from this.
That pump from difflock may not seem cheap but it sure does make the job quick and clean!
At 7 ltrs. a chuck it will pay for itself within a couple of weeks!
